To celebrate the launch of my new book Haunted Highgate on Hallowe’en 2014, I was honoured to be offered a photoshoot with Lorcan Maguire of Newton Photographic. I was already intending to spend the whole day garbed in Victorian costume for the Muswell Hill Geisterfest, so it seemed a shame not to make the most of such an elaborate outfit! And being photographed in a t-shirt and jeans just would not do justice to the amazingly gothic Highgate Cemetery and Swains Lane which is, after all, on my doorstep. With hindsight, we could have ditched the La Catrina skeletal arms, but there’s always another day in which to do a shoot in fully authentic period costume.
Newton Photographic are a Surrey-based team who cover London, the Thames Valley and the South, but will travel if requested. Lorcan also provided some fantastic illustrative photographs for Haunted Highgate itself, including an iconic image of Highgate Cemetery’s famous Egyptian Avenue of 1839, which was selected for the front cover. Newton Photographic specialise in reportage of alternative and horror / gothic based events, as well as theatrical reportage, but can turn their hand to architectural photography and commemorative portraits of special events (including weddings of course!). I cannot recommend them enough for their courteousness, professionalism and amazing talent.
It was a delight as ever to work with Lorcan, and I hope you enjoy his work. I also hope that his photos help those with an interest in Highgate’s paranormal legends and its extraordinarily strange psychical energy to soak up some up of its atmosphere.
